Behind the Art
Every Image Has a Story.
Some photographs begin with a carefully developed idea. Others emerge from a fleeting moment, a special encounter, or the fascinating interplay of light and shadow.
But the story of a photograph does not always end when the shutter is released.
Sometimes, that is where it truly begins.

Behind the Art tells the stories of selected photographs, the moments in which they were created, and the thoughts and experiences that accompany them. Stories of people, places, and situations that have inspired me as a photographer. And of images that find another form of expression through artistic interpretation.
Here, original photographs meet their transformations into Painterly and Sketch Art. Not as replacements for photography, but as different ways of revealing an image's atmosphere, character, and emotional impact.
One Image. Two Forms of Expression.
A photograph captures a moment. An artistic interpretation can tell its story in a new way.
Sometimes, photographic details evolve into expressive areas of colour and painterly textures. At other times, an image is reduced to lines, hatching, and its essential elements.
The following comparisons reveal two different ways in which a photograph can develop beyond its original form. Move the slider to discover how the visual impact changes between the original photograph and its artistic interpretation.
Along the Orange Line – Painterly
A historic tram in the harbour of Port de Sóller, captured during an unexpected moment. This travel photograph became my very first Painterly interpretation – and marked the beginning of an entirely new artistic direction.

Held Breath – Sketch
A quiet moment during a photography workshop at Gut Langenbach. Natural window light and the sensitive expression of my model Angelina come together to create a distinctive atmosphere, which takes on a new graphic intensity in the Sketch interpretation.

The Stories Behind the Images
Behind every photograph are experiences, decisions, and sometimes small coincidences. A special location, an encounter with someone, or a moment of light that lasts only a few seconds.
In my Behind the Art articles, I share these stories. How the photographs came to life, what makes them particularly meaningful or inspiring to me, and why I chose a specific form of artistic interpretation.
Every story is different. And each one reveals another aspect of my photographic and artistic work.
When Photographs Become Artworks
My artistic interpretations grew from a desire to explore photographs beyond the moments in which they were captured. Not every image calls for such a transformation. Yet some subjects open up possibilities that reach far beyond their original photographic representation.
Through my Painterly and Sketch works, new visual worlds emerge – preserving their origins in photography while developing an artistic language of their own.
A selection of these works can be found in my Wall Art Collection. Here, original photographs, painterly interpretations, and sketch-inspired artworks come together in a diverse collection.
Behind the Art is an ongoing project. With every new story, another perspective opens up on what lies behind my images.
