A Walk in the Park – A Summer of Lightness

A warm summer day, an inspiring encounter with singer-songwriter Laura Alden and a moment filled with carefree joy. "A Walk in the Park" tells the story of a relaxed photo shoot in the summer of 2020 and how a vibrant Painterly interpretation brings the warmth, freedom and positive spirit of the original photograph to life in an entirely new way.

Some photo shoots stay in your memory not because of elaborate planning or an extraordinary location, but simply because everything falls into place. The light, the atmosphere, the people – and that wonderful feeling that a moment doesn't need much direction to become something special.
"A Walk in the Park" was created in the summer of 2020 during my first photo shoot with singer-songwriter Laura Alden (@lauramariaalden).
It was one of those warm summer days when time seems to slow down a little. The sun was high, nature was showing its most beautiful colours, and we quickly found an easy, relaxed way of working together.
An Encounter Filled with Creativity
Laura brought not only her natural charm but also the kind of creative openness that makes a photographic collaboration particularly enjoyable.
As a singer-songwriter, she is accustomed to expressing emotions and personal experiences through her music. That same ability to embrace a moment was evident throughout our photo shoot.
We didn't need elaborate staging. Much of what happened developed quite naturally.
A smile, a fleeting moment with closed eyes, the warmth of the sun on her skin – sometimes it is precisely these seemingly insignificant moments that give a photograph its special character.
A Summer Day Without Elaborate Staging
With "A Walk in the Park", I wasn't trying to impose a particular story on the scene. Instead, I wanted to capture the natural lightness of that summer day.
Laura stands barefoot on a sunlit path, casually holding her shoes in one hand. Her face is turned towards the sunlight, her eyes gently closed. Her posture is relaxed, almost as though she has forgotten everything around her for a moment.
For me, the photograph draws its strength from precisely this sense of spontaneity.
The summer landscape provides a peaceful setting without demanding attention. The sunlight creates warm contours and enhances the positive atmosphere.
It isn't a photograph that sets out to tell a grand story. Instead, it preserves a feeling: the freedom to simply exist in the moment and enjoy life.
When an Encounter Becomes a Memory
Since our photo shoot, Laura has continued to pursue her musical journey with dedication. She now lives and works in Ireland again, devoting herself to her music and reaching an international audience with her songs.
It is wonderful to see how her creative personality continues to develop through her music and how many people she has inspired along the way.
Our time together resulted in many more photographs, revealing different sides of Laura's personality and natural presence. You can explore a selection of these images in my photo gallery featuring Laura Alden.
For me, "A Walk in the Park" is therefore more than a summer photograph. It is also a memory of an inspiring first encounter.
Sometimes, images like these become even more meaningful as the years pass. They preserve a moment that has long since gone, yet its atmosphere comes alive again whenever we look at the photograph.
The Lightness of the Moment
When I later began exploring an artistic interpretation of this photograph, one thing was clear from the very beginning: I wanted to preserve its original atmosphere.
I wasn't interested in telling a different story.
Quite the opposite. I wanted the warmth, carefree spirit and positive energy of the original photograph to become even more expressive in the Painterly version.
A fleeting summer moment would become an image that feels almost like a cherished memory of a particularly beautiful day.

When Summer Becomes Colour
Some photographs invite us to completely reinterpret their original atmosphere. Others already possess a mood that we simply want to experience a little more intensely.
For me, "A Walk in the Park" clearly belongs to the second category.
The carefree spirit of summer captured in the original photograph became the starting point for its Painterly interpretation. I didn't want to change its positive, life-affirming atmosphere, but to give it greater intensity through colour and painterly expression.
A Feeling of Sunshine and Freedom
In the original photograph, natural sunlight, gentle shades of green and Laura's relaxed posture define the atmosphere.
The Painterly interpretation takes these elements and transforms them into a considerably more colourful visual world.
The greens of the summer landscape become more vibrant. Light blues and turquoise tones bring an airy freshness to the background, while warm shades of yellow, orange and pink make the sunlight feel almost tangible.
The colours become more expressive without losing the lightness of the scene.
The result is an atmosphere that feels less like a single photographed moment and more like the essence of an entire summer.
Between Photography and a Painterly Memory
In the Painterly version, the precise photographic structures partially dissolve into an expressive, painting-like visual language.
The landscape becomes softer yet more colourful. Some contours gain emphasis, while other areas merge into lively fields of colour.
This combination of pronounced outlines and painterly freedom gives the image a distinctive energy.
Laura remains the unmistakable centre of the composition.
Her relaxed posture, closed eyes and gentle smile preserve the very spontaneity that captivated me in the original photograph.
The artistic interpretation doesn't introduce a new narrative. It simply gives the existing feeling more room to unfold.
The Colours of a Carefree Summer
To me, summer has a visual language all its own.
It isn't just about warm temperatures or long days. It's that sense of freedom, of little escapes from everyday life, and of moments when the world suddenly feels wonderfully light.
That is exactly the feeling I wanted to preserve in "A Walk in the Park".
The more intense colours and painterly textures give the scene an almost dreamlike quality. Not as an imaginary world, but as a memory that has grown brighter, warmer and more colourful with time.
After all, we rarely remember every single blade of grass or the precise shade of the sky.
What remains is the feeling.
A Story That Keeps Its Lightness
Seen side by side, the two versions of "A Walk in the Park" reveal different expressions of the same atmosphere.
The photograph preserves the actual moment: a warm summer day, a relaxed encounter and Laura's natural presence.
The Painterly interpretation moves a little further away from photographic reality and focuses more strongly on what that moment conveys.
Joy. Warmth. A carefree spirit.
While other works in my "Behind the Art" series take on an entirely different atmosphere through their artistic interpretation, "A Walk in the Park" remains faithful to its original story.
The interpretation doesn't change the character of the image. It simply allows that character to emerge in a different way.
A Summer That Stays
When I look back at this photograph today, I remember a wonderful summer day and an inspiring collaboration with Laura.
It was our first photo shoot together – one in which the simple pleasure of photography took centre stage.
For me, the later Painterly interpretation became a way of carrying that feeling beyond the original moment.
Perhaps that is one of the most beautiful qualities of artistic photography: it can show us not only what a moment looked like, but also what it felt like.
