Painterly – When Photography Becomes Painterly

Wenn Fotografie malerisch wird

With Painterly, my Wall Art Collection gains a new form of expression. Selected photographs are transformed into painterly interpretations — somewhere between photography, colour, texture and atmosphere.

Painterly – When Photography Becomes Painterly

Photography does not have to end when the shutter is released.

For some time now, I have been exploring ways to take selected photographs within my Wall Art Collection beyond their original visual language. The Sketch interpretations were a first step — reducing photography to lines, structures and contrasts.

With Painterly, another form of interpretation now joins the collection.

Between Photography and Painting

Every Painterly begins with one of my photographs. The subject, composition, light and atmosphere remain the foundation of the image. During the creative process, however, its visual language begins to change.

Photographic details recede, while shapes and textures become more prominent. Transitions become softer or are deliberately emphasised. The image gradually moves away from its purely photographic appearance and begins to take on the character of a painting.

The intention is not to make a photograph imitate a painting as perfectly as possible. What matters much more is the atmosphere of the original image: What happens when a photograph no longer has to describe every detail?

Not Every Photograph Wants to Become a Painterly

The choice of image plays an important role in this process.

Some photographs work precisely because of their clarity and documentary character. Others already possess a painterly quality in their original form — through light, colour, movement, landscape or the presence of a person.

Those are the images that interest me for Painterly.

There is therefore no fixed recipe that can simply be applied to every photograph. Each image requires its own decision about how far the interpretation should move away from its photographic origin.

Sometimes the photograph remains clearly visible. In other works, the boundaries become more fluid.

Three Paths Within the Wall Art Collection

Painterly adds another visual dimension to my Wall Art Collection.

Fine Art Prints preserve the photographic character of the original.

Sketch reduces selected images to a graphic, drawing-like interpretation.

Painterly takes them further in a more painterly direction.

Three different forms of expression with the same origin: photography.

For me, they are not competing approaches. Instead, they demonstrate how differently a single photographic image can be perceived and interpreted.

Photography Is Allowed to Change

Perhaps that is what fascinates me most about Painterly.

For me, a photograph does not have to be an immutable final result. It can become the starting point for something new without losing its origins.

Painterly exists precisely within this space — where the photograph is still visible, but no longer solely determines what the image is allowed to become.

And that is exactly where things become interesting for me.
