On May 25, 2014, my first “auf Bismarck” on-location workshop took place. Over the following years, a total of 14 more workshops followed until August 23, 2020. After that, the railway depot in Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck fell silent for the time being due to the pandemic.

On May 25, 2014, my first “auf Bismarck” on-location workshop took place. Over the following years, a total of 14 more workshops followed until August 23, 2020. After that, the railway depot in Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck fell silent for the time being due to the pandemic.

For 2023, I had planned to resume workshops at this unique location. Unfortunately, I later learned that the venue would no longer be available. Following a change of ownership, the association was ultimately displaced, and the site was transferred from the Regionalverband Ruhr (RVR) to CAF Deutschland GmbH. In the future, modern battery-powered regional trains will be stationed there. Further information can be found, for example, on the website of the City of Gelsenkirchen.

Unfortunately, this also means that there will be no further “at Bismarck” workshops. The workshop in August 2020 was the last of its kind.

But what made this workshop series so special? Above all, the extraordinary location itself. Parts of the former railway depot in Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck were exclusively available to us – including railway tracks, old wagons, the former coal bunker, locomotive driver shelters, the historic sanding facility, and many other fascinating spots spread across the vast area.

A particular highlight was a large hall filled with historic locomotives, including a Class 44 steam locomotive. There was also a training wagon where we could review images over a cup of coffee or simply take a short break.

What remains are the wonderful memories of these workshops, the inspiring conversations with models and participants, and a collection of photographs created during that time.

This photo was taken during one of my workshops at the former railway depot in Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck — a place full of rust, silence, and the fading echoes of industrial history. Back then, the location was still a true lost place. Overgrown tracks, abandoned tanks, forgotten corners everywhere you looked. Exactly the kind of atmosphere that inspired countless ideas, workshops, and spontaneous moments like this one. The image originally became part of my series “me and my models” — a collection of spontaneous photographs created during shootings and workshops. Small memories captured somewhere between photography, friendship, and the shared passion for extraordinary places. – Dieses Foto entstand während eines meiner Workshops im ehemaligen Bahnbetriebswerk Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck — einem Ort voller Rost, Stille und den letzten Spuren vergangener Industriegeschichte. Damals war die Location noch ein echter Lost Place. Überwucherte Gleise, verlassene Kesselwagen und überall dieser besondere Charme des Vergessenen. Genau diese Atmosphäre machte den Ort über viele Jahre zu einer perfekten Kulisse für Workshops, Bildideen und spontane Erinnerungen wie diese hier. Das Foto wurde später Teil meiner Serie „me and my models“ — einer Sammlung spontaner Aufnahmen, die während Shootings und Workshops entstanden sind. Kleine Erinnerungen irgendwo zwischen Fotografie, Freundschaft und der gemeinsamen Leidenschaft für außergewöhnliche Orte.

Between warm light, heavy steel, and the atmosphere of a forgotten railway era, this “Behind the Scenes” image was taken during my very first workshop at the former railway depot in Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck in May 2014. While creative ideas and lighting setups were taking shape in the foreground, the real giant of the scenery was already waiting in the background: an impressive Class 44 steam locomotive. This combination of industrial charm, history, and creative collaboration made the workshop something truly special back then. A moment somewhere between technology, atmosphere, and the passion for photography. – Zwischen warmem Licht, schwerem Stahl und dem Geruch vergangener Eisenbahnzeiten entstand dieses „Behind the Scenes“-Foto während meines ersten Workshops im ehemaligen Bahnbetriebswerk Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck im Mai 2014. Während vorne konzentriert an Bildideen gearbeitet wurde, wartete im Hintergrund bereits der eigentliche Star der Kulisse: eine beeindruckende Dampflok der Baureihe 44. Genau diese Mischung aus Industriecharme, Geschichte und kreativer Zusammenarbeit machte diesen Workshop damals zu etwas Besonderem. Ein Moment irgendwo zwischen Technik, Atmosphäre und der Leidenschaft für Fotografie.

Mein Foto „girls are going straight“ mit dem hinreißenden Model Josephin entstand während eines Workshops im Spätsommer 2014 auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen Bahnbetriebswerkes Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck. Ich konnte während des Workshops immer wieder mal ein, zwei Fotos fotografieren, z.B. um den Teilnehmern die Bildidee, den Spot und das Licht zu demonstrieren.

Manchmal sind es nicht die großen Posen, die berühren. Sondern die Momente dazwischen. Ein Lachen, das nicht geplant war. Ein Augenblick, der sich gegen jedes Skript entscheidet. Sie lachte – nicht für die Kamera, nicht für die Welt, sondern für sich selbst. Es war dieses Lachen, das alles andere vergessen ließ. Echtheit, eingefangen in einem Wimpernschlag. Du spürst es fast, dieses Knistern zwischen Ausbruch und Stille. Zwischen der rauen Textur der Wand und der Leichtigkeit dieses Augenblicks. Ein Bild wie ein Gespräch, das nie geführt wurde – aber genau weiß, was gesagt werden müsste.

Das Foto entstand im Mai 2014 während meines ersten On-Location-Workshops auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen Bahnbetriebswerks in Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck. Im Grunde war es nicht mehr als ein Schnappschuss – mein letztes „Making of“ am Ende eines langen Tages. Die tief stehende Sonne inspirierte schließlich den Namen des Bildes.
