Sometimes you simply have to face the facts — or better yet: the naked truth. I’ve been organizing photography workshops in people photography for many years now. Portraits, fashion, fine nude art — the full spectrum. And I can tell you this: no matter how hard I try to present my Portrait and fashion workshops in the best possible light, with fantastic models, lighting setups to fall in love with, and tips that are genuinely worth gold — in the end, fine nude art workshops outperform them all. By a wide margin.

Now you might say: “Well, Frank, that’s obvious. Skin attracts attention.”

And yes, that’s true. But it’s still fascinating how clearly this effect becomes visible. While a fashion workshop with a top model, stylist, and high-end location often generates only limited interest or few registrations, a fine nude art workshop at the exact same location — with just a little less fabric involved — is often fully booked within days.

The Attention Span Problem

We live in a time where social media users decide within a fraction of a second whether an image is “catchy” or not. And what works reliably there?

👉 Exactly. Skin.

You can post the most beautiful Portrait imaginable — perfectly lit, filled with emotion and depth, with a model who practically lets every highlight dance through the frame — and yet it often stands little chance against a sensual fine nude art photograph. And yes: the same principle applies to workshop promotions.

I already notice it in the click numbers alone. A fashion workshop usually requires plenty of promotion and advertising effort. A fine nude art workshop? Often a single tasteful black-and-white teaser is enough — and suddenly the participant list is full.

The Call of Adventure

For many people, a workshop is also a small creative escape from everyday life. A chance to leave routine behind and immerse themselves in something inspiring. And the more unusual the topic feels, the more exciting it becomes.

Portraits can easily be photographed with a friend or a familiar model in a park. But fine nude art photography? That requires trust, sensitivity, and above all, a professional environment where everything feels safe and respectful. Many photographers would never attempt it on their own. A workshop provides exactly that protected framework: experienced guidance, professional models, and a respectful atmosphere.

In short: fine nude art workshops feel a little like an invitation into a different league. And who wouldn’t want a glimpse behind that curtain?

The Myth of the “Fine Nude Art Photographer”

And then there’s this quiet little voice somewhere in the back of the mind:

“If I photograph fine nude art, I must be… a real photographer.”

Sounds a bit silly? Maybe. But let’s be honest — a little status thinking exists in many of us. Fine nude art photography is still often perceived as the “artistic genre”: sophisticated, emotional, demanding. Whether that reputation is always justified or not doesn’t really matter. The image exists — and it attracts attention.

So What Does That Mean for My Other Workshops?

Does this mean I’ll stop offering Portrait and fashion workshops? Of course not. Those genres still hold enormous creative potential. But maybe I’ll need to borrow a few tricks from the world of fine nude art workshops in the future.

Perhaps a “Fashion meets Skin” concept? Or a Portrait workshop lit only by candlelight, filled with soft shadows and a touch of mystery?

Or maybe I should simply write “No nudity — but still damn good” in big letters on the next Portrait workshop flyer. Experimenting is part of photography after all — just like with my workshop [Portraits | Fashion | Lingerie].

Yes, Skin Sells — But That’s Not Everything

The truth is simple: skin sells. It always has. The old masters knew it, advertising knows it, and photography workshops are no exception.

But good photography is about far more than skin alone. It’s about atmosphere, light, trust, respect, and the connection between technique and emotion — whether in fashion photography or fine nude art.

And in the end, what matters most to me is that every participant takes something valuable home from a workshop.

Not just strong images, but also fresh ideas, renewed confidence, and the feeling of having grown creatively as a photographer.

And if naked skin sometimes makes that process easier — well then, maybe it’s worth pointing the camera toward the essentials after all.

So stay curious, stay creative — and every now and then, dare to create powerful images without relying on skin alone.
