The Homburger Papiermühle became the stage for an atmospheric ballet shooting filled with movement, light, and contrast. Between industrial architecture and classical elegance, a photo series emerged that combines dance, expression, and Portrait photography in a unique way.

The Homburger Papiermühle provided the perfect setting for a ballet shooting filled with atmosphere, movement, and contrast. Between historic walls, rough textures, and industrial charm, a photo series emerged that combines classical elegance with an unusual location. In the middle of this unique environment, Yvette moved with impressive precision, emotional expression, and the effortless grace that makes ballet so captivating.

What fascinated me most was the contrast between the delicate aesthetics of dance and the raw architecture of the old paper mill. This tension gave the images their distinctive character. Light, shadow, and the textures of the location further enhanced the visual language and created an atmosphere that feels both timeless and modern.

The shooting originally took place in the summer of 2018. Some time ago, I revisited the complete series and re-evaluated it through the lens of my current photographic perspective. Some images were intentionally republished, others remained untouched, and a few disappeared permanently into the virtual archive because they no longer matched my current standards.

The Fascination of Ballet as a Photographic Expression

Ballet photography requires far more than technical knowledge alone. What truly matters is a feeling for movement, body language, and timing. Every pose changes within fractions of a second, and every subtle movement influences expression, tension, and visual impact.

Especially in a location like the Homburger Papiermühle, the interplay between light and shadow played a central role. Many of the images were captured directly in motion, supported by powerful studio flashes. This allowed us to almost freeze the dancer’s movements while preserving the elegance and fluidity of every pose.

Of course, many visual ideas did not work perfectly on the first attempt. Some movements had to be repeated several times until timing, expression, and lighting aligned exactly as intended. This intense collaboration between dancer and photographer is what makes such shootings both demanding and incredibly rewarding.

Yvette contributed not only technical precision, but also tremendous emotional presence. For one day, she transformed the historic paper mill into a stage for ballet and movement. The combination of controlled studio lighting, flowing motion, and rough industrial architecture resulted in a photo series that conveys both strength and elegance.

Naturally, the shooting was also physically exhausting. Many of the demanding poses and jumps required multiple repetitions before the decisive moment could be captured perfectly. Yet it was precisely this concentration and endurance that ultimately led to the images that define this series today.

The ballet shooting at the Homburger Papiermühle beautifully demonstrates how powerful the combination of dance, architecture, and Portrait photography can be. Between industrial roughness and the elegance of ballet, a visual language full of atmosphere, movement, and expression emerged — shaped by light, timing, and the intense collaboration between dancer and photographer.
