Between Movement, Gaze, and Presence

I first met Raffaela in 2016, when she came to my studio for an initial meeting and portrait session. In conversation, she spoke about her path as a dancer, many years of ballet training, and her deep connection to movement.

Spontaneously, we decided to take the shoot beyond the studio — into the old town of Essen-Kettwig. There, the first images of a ballerina emerged, carried by lightness, presence, and a very distinct body language. This session later became the starting point for my project La Beauté du Ballet.

In the years that followed, up until 2018, we worked together several times — through shoots as well as shared workshops. Raffaela brought not only dancer’s precision, but also an openness and calm that enriched every encounter.

Then our paths separated. Raffaela began a multi-year training program as a musical theatre performer in Hamburg, followed by further international engagements.

It wasn’t until 2023 that our paths crossed again, when she temporarily returned to the region. During that time, more workshops took place around ballet, portrait, and fashion — intense, inspiring encounters that revealed new facets once again. By the end of the year, she moved on to Berlin, taking the next step in her artistic journey.

I look back with great appreciation on the time we shared — on the many encounters, the images created, and a collaboration shaped by trust, exchange, and mutual inspiration.

Some of these portraits are also part of Face to Face: images where movement does not become loud, but remains quietly tangible.
