Photographs from the Car Sculpture Park in the Neandertal: immersing into a morbid world

In 2014, I attended a photo workshop at the Car Sculpture Park twice. During these visits, a number of photographs were created along the way — snapshots, so to speak.

All of the cars and vehicles in the park are classic automobiles from the 1950s, deliberately left to decay. Rust and patina cover their bodies, giving them a morbid charm and telling stories of times long past. Trees and sky are reflected in the weathered windows, while nature slowly reclaims what were once gleaming automobiles.

The photographs capture the sense of transience inherent in every automobile. Once proud vehicles are now little more than shadows of their former selves — a melancholic memento mori. The images remind us that everything is impermanent, even objects that once seemed so enduring.

The cars in the park are not only witnesses of the past, but have become part of nature itself. Moss and ivy wind their way around the bodies, trees grow through windows and doors. The photographs reveal a unique symbiosis of nature and technology, creating a very distinctive atmosphere.

The lighting conditions within the park play an essential role in the images. Sunlight filtering through the leaves bathes the cars in a warm glow. Interplay of light and shadow, along with deep contrasts, gives the photographs a mysterious and slightly surreal mood.
